I had never heard a voice like Tracy Chapman. It cut through a noisy college common room, playing in the background to oblivious teenagers. I was mesmerised from that first burst of Fast Car. Tracy Chapman quickly became a conduit for a lifelong love of singer songwriters who have a message to deliver. I can’t hear this album without remembering my college days but that’s the beauty of music isn’t it? It’s power to transport whether it be a personal moment in time or a political issue. This album is timeless and I imagine playing it in whatever future format will be with us when I’m in my golden years still trying to put the world to rights!
